Some mottling of the upper leaf surface may be caused. It had been assumed that the host for P.sagitella was exclusively Populus tremula but P.comparella is now also known from this host. It is now advisable to check the pupa or breed through to confirm the identity of a Phyllonorycter species on Aspen.
